Founded with the vision to provide quality education to the marginalised section of the society, the Sulabh Public Schools’ mission is strongly aligned with the Sustainable Development Goal 4.

Established in 1992 by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, the aim of Sulabh Public School was to eliminate social disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for children from vulnerable and economically marginalised sections.

The school since its inception has stood on grounds of a belief that “Education alone can empower the weak and the poor”.

The idea of the school came about as an extension of the Sulabh Sanitation Movement which was started in the 1970s to rehabilitate women sanitation workers who cleaned dry latrine manually. Due to their occupation and lower social status they systematically faced severe discrimination the society. Whilst, under the leadership of Bindeshwar Pathak, the nationwide sanitation movement succeeded in rehabilitating and empowering tens of thousands of sanitation workers — also known as manual scavengers, but providing quality education to their children was still a challenge.

Dr. Pathak felt that to break the cycle of stigma and discrimination, it was imperative to envision a future for the children of manual scavengers where they can live a life of dignity at par with others. The only way to achieve that was to provide good quality education to their children. Hence the Sulabh Public school was set up.

The school has promoted a 60:40 ratio where 60% of the class strength is reserved for the children coming from socially and economically backward section. These students receive yearly educational aid, with free tuition, books, stationery and uniforms.

In the last 28 years, over ten thousand students got enrolled with the school. In line with SDG 4.3 (equal access to technical and vocation training), the institution also houses a vocational institutional training centre for students to get hands-on training in skill development.

SISASSS program imparts training in fields like fashion designing, electrical work, beauty and wellness and computing. The agenda behind the SISASSS program is to provide vocational training in areas that can help the youth to be self-reliant, promote entrepreneurship. Such programs are also designed to create skilled and trained manpower so that all youth and adults, especially girls and women, can acquire relevant knowledge, skills and competencies for decent work and life (SDG 4.4)

Education Main

Sulabh Public School has included awareness on sanitation and hygiene as one of its prominent principles. The school was recognised as one of the first few schools in the country to promote girl safety and health awareness programs for the students. The school is also proud to have the in-house sanitary napkin dispenser and incinerator for the benefit of our students.

The school has certain unique features such as:

  • • The school provides a friendly and fear-free environment to enhance student’s participation and attendance.
  • • Co-Curricular activities are organized at regular intervals for the all-round development of the student.
  • • The toilets are cleaned by the teachers and the students in order to inculcate the value and habit of cleanliness.

The school initially provided education up to the high school level, but after realizing the growing interest from parents and support from the government and various organizations, the school was finally recognized and received its secondary accreditation by CBSE in the year 2003. The school continues to support its alumni to gain admissions to reputed institution for further education.

The school has inculcated sports and fine arts as part of the extracurricular activities to help the students develop their cognitive skills. Academia also introduced hygiene and social awareness to elevate the living standards and cultivate moral practices among the students. The students have been constantly encouraged to use English as a medium of conversation to prepare the students to take on the challenges of the modern world. Special emphasis is placed on areas such as problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, communication skills and conflict resolution, which can be used across a range of occupational fields.

The steps have been taken to ensure that every student graduating from Sulabh Public School is confident. Apart from the skills needed to compete in the job market, the students – importantly – are trained to work in diverse environments and are taught to promote harmony, respect diversity and dignity of labour.
