Sulabh Sanitation Club Launches WASH & Sustainability Workshops in Kapilvastu, Nepal

In a vital step toward promoting hygiene and sustainability among school communities in Nepal, the Sulabh Sanitation Club launched its WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) and Sustainability Education workshop series on 8th June 2025 in Kapilvastu, Lumbini Province. The inaugural session was held at Buddha Padama School and witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 100 students and 10 teachers.

Promoting a Culture of Cleanliness Through Youth Engagement

The workshop aimed to strengthen hygiene practices and environmental responsibility in schools by establishing peer-led Sanitation Clubs. These student-led bodies are designed to promote hand hygiene, toilet cleanliness, menstrual hygiene awareness, and effective waste management throughout the school year.

Through interactive games, demonstrations, and team-based activities, students learned about safe water handling, handwashing techniques, and personal sanitation—embedding essential hygiene habits in an engaging and fun environment.

"The games made hygiene fun—we didn’t even realize we were learning so much!"

-Suhani, Grade 9, Buddha Padma High School.

Breaking the Silence Around Menstruation

A key session focused on menstrual hygiene management (MHM), providing a safe, inclusive space for adolescent girls to learn, ask questions, and break cultural taboos that often lead to absenteeism and embarrassment.

"Talking about periods in school felt strange at first, but the trainers made us feel comfortable. Now I know how to take care of myself and help others."
-Riya, Grade 9, Taleswar Nath High School

Empowering Teachers with Creative Hygiene Education Tools

The workshop also empowered teachers with innovative tools and techniques to integrate hygiene education into everyday classroom practices. By using storytelling, visuals, and group exercises, teachers were encouraged to approach sanitation topics with creativity and sensitivity.

"The sessions were not only informative but also fun. I’ve learned how to make hygiene a part of my everyday teaching."
-Ms. Laxmi, Primary School Teacher

"Workshops like these give us tools to support students in a more holistic way."
-Mr. Baburam Bhandari, Headmaster, Buddha Padma High School

Supported by Strong Partnerships

This initiative was made possible with the support of the B.P. Koirala India-Nepal Foundation, which continues to foster meaningful people-to-people collaboration across health, education, and sustainable development sectors.

By empowering both students and teachers, the WASH and Sustainability Education workshop series marks a significant move toward building healthier, more informed school environments in Nepal.
