Pakyong, Sikkim | October 15, 2026

The Sulabh Sanitation Club, with support from Alkem Foundation, dedicated a Girls’ Changing Room at Mamring Government Senior Secondary School in Pakyong, Sikkim, on October 15, 2026. The initiative aimed to improve menstrual hygiene facilities and provide a safe, private and supportive environment for adolescent girls at school.

The newly dedicated facility provides access to water, a private space for changing sanitary products and provisions for menstrual waste disposal. It is designed to help girls manage menstruation with dignity and confidence, while supporting their regular attendance and participation in school activities.

The programme was attended by Mr. Targyen Lepcha, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Pakyong, who emphasised the importance of adequate sanitation infrastructure in schools. He highlighted how dedicated changing rooms could address the needs of adolescent girls and acknowledged the value of collaboration between government institutions, schools and organisations such as Sulabh and Alkem Foundation.

Mr. Samir Kumar of Alkem Foundation reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to improving school sanitation facilities through its partnership with Sulabh International and expressed hope that similar initiatives would be extended to more schools across Sikkim.

Ms. Samikshya Das Mohapatra, Coordinator, Sulabh Sanitation Club, emphasised that menstruation should never become a barrier to girls' education. She highlighted the importance of providing appropriate facilities that enable girls to attend school comfortably and confidently during their menstrual cycles.

Mr. Kailash Sharma, Assistant Director, District Education Office, Pakyong, also underscored the need for dedicated changing rooms in government schools to ensure privacy, convenience and a supportive learning environment for girl students.

The initiative reflected the Sulabh Sanitation Club's continued efforts to strengthen school WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) infrastructure, promote menstrual hygiene management and create more inclusive, girl-friendly learning environments across Sikkim.
